Bagshaw`s 1850 Directory: Whaley-cum-Yerdsley
WHALEY-CUM-YERDSLEY, is a township, and considerable village, 8 1/2 miles S.E. of Stockport, which comprises 1,280 acres of land, the principal landowner of which, is John JODRELL Esq., besides whom Richard GASKELL, Esq., Mr John ROBINSON, and Mr John HANDFORD are also proprietors. In 1841, there were 137 houses and 663 inhabitants; population in 1801 225, in 1831 403. Rateable value £1,936. The tithes have been commuted for £124. YEARDSLEY HALL was for many generations, the seat of the JODRELLS. About 1776, the greatest part of the old house was taken down with the intention of rebuilding it, but this design was subsequently abandoned, and it is now occupied as a farm house. WHALEY BRIDGE, is a small village on the Manchester road, here are two collieries which produce an abundant quality of excellent coal. YEARDSLEY, is a small hamlet 1 1/2 miles N. from Whaley Bridge. The baptists have a small chapel in the township. The Peak Forest Canal runs for a mile and a half on the western side of the township, and meets the Cromford railway at Whaley Bridge. The Manchester and Derby mail passes through the village daily, and coaches call at the Jodrell Arms three times a day, for Manchester and Buxton. The Post Office is at the Jodrell Arms.
CHARITIES - John LEGH, in 1692 left, 13s 4d. to the poor of Whaley, and 6s. 8d. to the poor of Taxall. The sum of £50 left by William BRADBURY in 1702, is vested in the Manchester and Buxton turnpike road, for the benefit of the poor. A yearly sum of 10s. is distributed from the bequest of Francis GASKILL. Edmund NIXON, in 1793, left the interest of £10 for the benefit of the poor persons of this township. Rev. John GEE, in 1786, gave the interest of £50 to be distributed among the necessitous persons in Whaley.
